Rhode Island Bulky Item Pickup Guide: Providence, Cranston, Warwick & Pawtucket
Trying to get rid of an old sofa, dresser, table or appliance in Rhode Island? The answer depends on your city, whether your building receives municipal trash service, and what the item is. There is no single statewide curbside bulky-item schedule. This guide compares four common local options, with links to the official city instructions so you can confirm the latest rules before setting anything outside.
Providence: schedule bulky furniture in advance
Providence residents at eligible properties receiving city residential waste service can arrange collection for certain large household furniture through Waste Management. The city says pickup must be scheduled; do not put furniture out before the permitted window. Buildings with more than six units need to work through the property owner or manager. Mattresses have a separate procedure and may carry a fee. See the City of Providence bulky-item guide for eligibility, current limits and the scheduling form.
Cranston: fees and seasonal exceptions matter
Cranston directs residents to Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule bulky-waste or mattress pickup. Standard bulky-item fees may apply. Cranston also announced a limited free bulky-waste program for March and September 2026, with exclusions and a three-item limit; that promotion is not a year-round blanket policy. Review Cranston Public Works and its seasonal bulky-waste announcement before booking.
Warwick: an appointment is required
Warwick accepts certain household furniture for scheduled bulky pickup, but does not include mattresses and box springs in that program. Construction debris is excluded. Warwick has separate instructions for recyclable metal and other materials. Check Warwick’s scheduling page and confirm the current item limit directly with the city rather than assuming a couch can be left on the curb on trash day.
Pawtucket: furniture appointments and separate mattress fees
Pawtucket’s 2026 city calendar says furniture must be scheduled for curbside collection and allows up to three pieces per collection date. It describes separate charges for mattresses, box springs, refrigerators and freezers. Residents can book through the city’s online portal or contact Public Works. Read the Pawtucket 2026 waste and recycling calendar to verify prices, material restrictions and collection details.
When municipal pickup is not the right fit
- Inside the home: most curbside programs will not carry a couch down stairs or out of a basement.
- Multiple items or an estate: quantity limits and appointment dates can slow the project.
- Special materials: mattresses, electronics, appliances and demolition debris often follow different rules.
- Time-sensitive move: a scheduled full-service pickup may fit a closing or move-out deadline better.
